Abia Governorship Candidate, Narrowly Escapes Assassination Attempt

All Progressives Grand Allaince (APGA) Governorship candidate in the April election in Abia state, Dr Alex Otti has revealed to journalists in Umuahia, the state capital yesterday that unknown gunmen suspected to be hired assassins invaded and attacked his Abuja guest house in Maitama at about 2a.m and ransacked it in search of him.

He said that because he had left Abuja the previous day (Thursday ) to  Abia to attend his Election Petition session today/Friday , he escaped  his possible assassination by the gunmen but that the Police Security on duty whose name he did not make known , was shot  by the gunmen and died instantly.

He said “ if I spent that night in that house, only God would know what would have happened to me. I had spent the whole previous week in that house until Thursday I left to Abia state to attend the  sitting of  the Election Tribunal  in which I filed a petition to claim my denied victory at the poll.

I believe it was a clear assassination attempt and I thank God praying that such attempt will not happen again or continue to fail”.

According to him, details of the incident were still sketchy but the Police  who he said has  stepped into the matter and commenced investigation,  also had taken the body of the assassinated Police Officer.

Asked if similar incident had happened before,  he said that there had been pockets of  such threats  since he filled his petition challenging the declaration of  his PDP opponent in the election as the winner adding that he handed  over his security in the hands of God.

The phones no longer ring By Reuben Abati

A very interesting article by former President Jonathan's spokesman, Reuben Abati. Read below...first published on Sunday Vanguard
As spokesman to President Goodluck Jonathan, my phones rang endlessly and became more than personal navigators within the social space. They defined my entire life; dusk to dawn, all year-round. The phones buzzed non-stop, my email was permanently active; my twitter account received tons of messages per second.
The worst moments were those days when there was a Boko Haram attack virtually every Sunday.

The intrusion into my private life was total as my wife complained about her sleep being disrupted by phones that never seemed to stop ringing. Besides, whenever I was not checking or responding to the phones, I was busy online trying to find out if the APC had said something contrarian or some other fellow was up to any mischief.

A media manager in the 21st century is a slave of the Breaking News, a slave particularly of the 24-hour news cycle, and a potential nervous breakdown case. Debo Adesina, my colleague at The Guardian once said I was running a “one week, one trouble schedule”.

There were actually moments when trouble knocked on the door every hour, and duty required my team and I to respond to as many issues that came up. Top of the task list was the management of phone calls related to the principal. In my first week on the job, for example, one of my phones ran out of battery and I had taken the liberty to charge it.

While it was still in the off mode, the “Control Room”: the all-powerful communications centre at the State House tried to reach me. They had only just that phone number, so I couldn’t be reached. When eventually they did, the fellow at the other end was livid. “SA Media, where are you? We have been trying to reach you. Mr President wants to speak with you” “Sorry, I was charging my phone. The phone was off.” “Sir, you can’t switch off your phone now. Mr President must be able to reach you at any time. You must always be available.” I was like: “really? Which kin job be dis?”

The Control Room eventually collected all my phone numbers. If I did not pick up a call on time, they called my wife. Sometimes the calls came directly from the Residence, as we referred to the President’s official quarters. “Abati, Oga dey call you!” If I still could not be reached, every phone that was ever connected to me would ring non-stop.

Busy bodies who had just picked up the information that Abati was needed also often took it upon themselves to track me down. My wife soon got used to her being asked to produce me, or a car showing up to take me straight to the Residence. I eventually got used to it, and learnt to remain on duty round-the-clock. In due course, President Jonathan himself would call directly. My wife used to joke that each time there was a call from him, even if I was sleeping, I would spring to my feet and without listening to what he had to say, I would start with a barrage of “Yes sirs”!

Other calls that could not be joked with were calls from my own office. Something could come up that would require coverage, or there could be a breaking story, or it could be something as harmless as office gossip, except that in the corridors of power, nothing is ever harmless. Looking back now, I still can’t figure out how I survived that onslaught of the terror of the telephone.

Tompolo's meeting with MEND members stopped as soldiers seal off meeting venue

The proposed MEND meeting which was scheduled to hold this morning did not hold as soldiers reportedly sealed off the Ijaw House, venue of the proposed meeting on the orders of the state governor, Dickson Seriake. Sources at the governors office say Seriake had sent a letter to MEND members proposing to meet with them at a later date to discuss their grievances. The group, through its spokesperson, Eric Omare, released a statement condemning the soldiers invasion of Ijaw House. Read the statement after the cut...

"The Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide condemn in the strongest terms the military invasion of Ijaw House, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State; the administrative headquarters of the Ijaw National Congress the Ijaw Youth Council and housing the Bayelsa State Ministry of Ijaw National Affairs and Culture. A combined team of military and police officers in the early hours of Friday, the 24th of July, 2015 invaded and took over Ijaw House, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State to prevent ex-Niger Delta agitators from having their proposed meeting on Saturday, the 25th of July, 2015. This is illegal, unconstitutional and a draw back to the dark days of military dictatorship where Nigerians were deprived of their fundamental rights. The IYC wishes to remind the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, that we are in a constitutional democracy where things are done according to law. The fears of many Nigerians that General Buhari would take Nigeria back to the dark days of dictatorship where there is no regard for human rights are coming to reality. The IYC has it on good authority that President Buhari has an agenda to bomb and destroy the Niger-Delta region especially the Ijaw areas. The military movement into the Niger Delta region we have been reliably informed would commence this week.”the statement read

Legendary Singer Onyeka Onwenu In N17 Million Bribe Scandal

Veteran actress and singer, Onyeka Onwenu, has been accused of demanding and collecting bribes through her personal assistant, Chika Abazu, from a contractor employed to carry out renovation works at the National Centre for Women Development [NCWD], where she is the director general according to reports by the Premium Times.

This accusation was made by Joseph Nwakama, an architect who works with Solidmark Associates Limited, the company employed by the Centre to carry out the renovation of its guest house.

After investigations carried out by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offenses Commission, ICPC, Mr. Abazu was found guilty of indeed demanding and receiving a total of N17 million bribe from the contractor but the commission has so far gotten no direct evidence which links Ms. Onwenu to the offense.

Mr. Abuza appeared in court on July 10 before a Federal Capital Territory High Court on a six-count charge of bribery and gratification where he pleaded not guilty to the charges but was denied bail and ordered remanded in the Federal Prisons, Kuje, until the case is dispensed with.

Although investigators could not directly link Ms. Onwenu to bribe taking, documents obtained by theicirnigeria.org have revealed so many wrongdoings by the Centre’s management under her watch, including funding the Solidmark contract with money taken from a Women Empowerment Program in Zamfara State and spending more than was budgeted for the project. That is apart from paying the contractor even before he was officially awarded the contract.

Why I Allowed Abacha To Arrest Me – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed the reasons why he allowed himself to be arrested by the Abacha regime despite many opportunities to escape and accept an offer of political asylum by the United States.

Obasanjo was among the opposition lights that were against the regime of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, who ordered their arrest, trials and sentences but spared their lives due to international pressure.

Abacha was the most senior military officer in the illegal contraption called Interim National Government led by Chief Ernest Shonekan after the military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, was forced to resign over the historic annulment of the June 12 June, 1993 election won by Moshood Abiola, who later died in the military gulag.

In his newest controversial memoir, ‘My Watch’, he narrated his opposition to the Abacha regime which led him to the formation of National Unity Organization which he intended to use to force Abacha to quit power.

According to his narrative, Obasanjo had been meeting with some leading politicians and non-politicians in every part of the country on the need to free the country from the jackboot of Abacha whom he said, “was so much below average as an officer that no serious attention was paid to him until he was made to announce the coup.
“I was not in doubt that Abacha would attempt to silence me. This was clear from his apparent ambition for life presidency of Nigeria in insatiable appetite for corruption; his looting directly from the Central Bank; his need to silence everyone that could oppose him in any form; his actions towards my close friends and associates and his close surveillance of me by his security both within and outside Nigeria.”
Obasanjo recalled how during his visit to Kenya for the funeral of the father of the opposition leader, Raila Odinga, where the Nigerian Embassy officials wrote a report indicting him, stating that “since Odinga was in opposition to the government of Kenya when he died, I had gone to Kenya to create problems for the Kenyan government by supporting the opposition, and the Nigerian government should restrain me from causing great problems between Nigeria and Kenya.”
Narrating further, Obasanjo said, “Rumours about Abacha taking action against me started to spread and ring louder and louder. I had no fear because I had done nothing to cause me fear or anxiety. I was about my life and my business unperturbed.”

Popular police and EFCC informant, Alhaji Gay, murdered (graphic)

Alhaji Gay is the number one trending topic in Nigeria right now. His real name is Razak Adetunji Alaso and before today, I'd never heard of him but apparently, he's popular within 'Yahoo Yahoo' circle in Lagos. They say he was very popular for tracking 'Yahoo' boys for the police and EFCC. Some say he was an EFCC/police imposter.

He was killed yesterday at Agbado Ijaiye, in Lagos. People in the know say there have been many attempts on his life - he's been stabbed and shot before but he survived. Guess the people after him succeeded this time. Sad! May his soul rest in peace, amen. See a photo of his body after the cut *graphic photo - be warned*

Full text of what Obama and Buhari said when they met today

Below is what President Obama said to President Buhari and his entourage...
Well, it’s a great pleasure to welcome President Buhari and his delegation here to the Oval Office for his first visit since the historic election that took place. Nigeria is obviously one of the important countries in the world and one of the most important countries in the African continent. Recently, we saw an election in which a peaceful transition to a new government took place. And it was an affirmation of Nigeria’s commitment to democracy, a recognition that although Nigeria is a big country and a diverse country with many different parts, nevertheless the people of Nigeria understand that only through a peaceful political process can change take place.

You Need To Read The 6 Revealing Reasons Why NFF Sacked Steven Keshi

The termination of Stephen Keshi’s contract as Super Eagles coach came as a surprise to many. However, insiders believe that he must have seen it coming. Below are six reasons why the Nigerian Football Federation sacked him;

1. The removal of Keshi’s presidency godfather
Keshi was well protected by former President Goodluck Jonathan and had links with DSS DG Ekpenyong. So, it was not a co-incidence that barely 48 hours after Ekpeyong was removed by President Muhammadu Buhari, Keshi was fired. The shield had been removed; the once powerless NFF could strike. And they did.

2. Keshi shot himself in the foot with Cote d’Ivoire application
If the NFF were looking for an excuse to get rid of Keshi, he just handed it to them on a plate. They were never going to pass up the opportunity.

3. Pinnick is an advocate for foreign coaches
Apparently, if NFF President Amaju Pinnick had his way, all the national teams would be handled by foreign coaches.

4. Keshi had too many enemies
After winning 2013 AFCON, Keshi started taking up battles with anyone who had a contrary opinion. He fought most of the press, his assistant coach Daniel Amokachi and, crucially, probably had no friends on the NFF board.

5. Performances on the pitch did not help Keshi’s cause.
Even Keshi’s staunchest supporters would agree that the team has not played well since winning AFCON in 2013. They did the barest minimum at the World Cup, where they won only one of four games, and were embarrassingly abject in failing to qualify for the 2015 AFCON.

6. Keshi’s endless rebuilding and dismantling of Super Eagles
Excessive experimentation with players is believed to have eventually led to failure to qualify to the AFCON 2015.

Niger Delta Militants Has Resumed Attacks! Invades Nigeria Customs Base In Akwa Ibom State

Niger Delta Militants
The invasion of Nigerian Customs Service Base in Oron, Akwa Ibom State by suspected heavily armed Niger Delta militants has resulted in the death of an officer and the loss of about 10 rifles belonging to the security agency.
According to a source, the last time the militants invaded prior to this incidence, they over powered the marine police and carted away their arms while the policemen fled for their lives. The source also added that the militants were better armed than the police in the area

According to another Premium Times source, the militants were becoming more daring by the day and have been wreaking havoc in many communities in the riverine area.
The source also claimed that there had been repeated attacks on the residents and even the police. The Police Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Gabriel Achong has however denied this claim dismissing this attack as an isolated case.
